Throughout my first two years of college professors and advisors constantly kept telling me how important internships are to gain a competitive advantage. As I started my junior year of college I knew it was time to find my first internship. I came across Brock Communications and after interviewing I knew I could see myself as an intern here. As I sit here on my first day I am seeing all the wonderful, endless possibilities. Just like anything in life I expect something to come out of my experiences. Here is my short list:
- Exploration – I hope to be able to learn from the public relations field; to test the waters and see if this is the career path I see myself in and to understand the qualifications and responsibilities.
- Ability to Apply Classroom Knowledge – I find it rewarding to test my classroom knowledge in professional environments. I like seeing how I am able to use what I have learned in my courses in the real world. This allows me to understand that all the time and effort I put into my classwork is helping me better my future career.
- Ability to Learn More – I am excited to have the ability to learn more about Public Relations from real, working professionals. I expect to learn more about how to write media alerts, press releases, social media posts and blogging. Interning will also teach me other aspects of a job such as professionally answering the phone, conducting research, attending meetings and contributing ideas.
- Personal Development – With this internship I expect to gain more self-confidence, leadership and teamwork skills. I believe working with professionals will allow me to become more reliable and timely as well. I believe this internship will help with my personal development more than any college coursework could.
