Reflections on a Brock Comm Internship

It was simply luck that led me to Brock Communications. I attended an internship fair at The University of Tampa, dragged there by a friend. I noticed there was a communications company on the list and thought it couldn’t hurt to drop off a resume. I gave my resume and walked away from the table. Fast forward about two months and I received an email from Paige asking if I would be interested in interviewing for an internship the following semester. I was thrilled and said yes. I had heard of Lisa Brock from a friend in one of her classes who said Lisa is her favorite professor. I couldn’t decide if I was terrified or excited that she wanted to interview me. As it turned out, Lisa was unavailable to interview me and I met with her associate, Audrey, and the rest is history.

I have been so fortunate to work for such a strong organization. I remember interviewing with Audrey and how her passion for the clients and work was contagious. When I was asked to be an intern I was incredibly excited to see where that energy came from.

I have certainly learned a lot while at Brock. Things weren’t always perfect because everyone is bound to make mistakes, but learning not to make the same ones is what internships are about.

Two of my favorite things were probably getting to write social media content for different clients and creating advertisements on InDesign. I loved seeing people comment, like, or share posts that I created and it was valuable to learn how social media is used professionally.  The wide range of work that is done here surprised me, I never thought I would be able to help create a print ad from scratch, but the variety of projects and different clients helped me figure out what aspects of PR I like most.

I gained so much from my internship – it’s hard to put everything into words. Sitting in on weekly meetings with Lisa allowed me to really understand how we help our clients, and the amount of time we spend on them makes it clear that everyone truly cares about the work and each other. We always started talking about business and would drift into a story Lisa had about someone or a similar experience. Somehow I learned just as much through her storytelling as I did while doing the tangible work.

Everyone was helpful and welcoming and I am so grateful for all they have done for me. It has truly been a pleasure. I can’t wait to see the great things that lie ahead for the company!
