A press release is only as effective as the words used to create it. So how are you supposed to ensure that your press release is favorable for the press? First things first, avoid using overused words or clichés. You will automatically earn brownie points for not including the same cliché in your press release that they have probably already seen 30 times earlier that day. Keep things simple, your press release is really just about the facts, and shouldn’t turn into a colorful fairy tale.
Here is a list of words and phrases dreaded by the media that PR pros should avoid:
- When asked his/her input
- Pleased/proud/excited to announce
- Once-in-a-lifetime experience/ opportunity
- For the first time ever
- Leading
- Outstanding
- Best
- Significant
- General
- Key
- Major
- Great
Do yourself and the press a favor and be creative by finding different ways to express yourself compared to your peers! What are other clichés you hate to read?
