Social Media Day 2014

Tampa is one of the top 10 most social-media savvy cities for small businesses and has an up-and-coming tech startup scene. In 2012, Mayor Bob Buckhorn declared June 30 as Social Media Day and we joined 13 other cities that year in the effort to shine light on the digital revolution.

Our team celebrated this year’s holiday on Monday in true social media fashion – networking, tweeting and munching on Pinterest-decorated cupcakes. We found that it was one of the only times we didn’t feel guilty about having our phones out while networking, and since our team consists of six millennials, we often want to chronicle our lives in Instagrams and tweets, and Social Media Day allowed us to do that.

But that’s the interesting part about social media… it can often leave us feeling not social and guilty about having our phones out. It’s reported that we spend 3.2 hours a day on social. Which is 3.2 fewer hours doing social things we used to do like talking with friends over the phone or having actual meeting instead of Google Hangouts and Go-To meeting.

We know the power of social media exists, but we want to challenge you to cut back on that 3.2 hours a day to focus on yourself (no, not your selfie) and find new passions without capturing it all on Instagram.

How do you feel about social media in today’s age?
